Did you know that our Aida 5 commercial building is not only a modern space for work and living but also holds a significant piece of Pärnu’s history?
At the end of the 19th century, the site where the current building stands was home to a flax granary called Bastion. This granary belonged to Hans Dietrich Schmidt, a Baltic German merchant. It served as a vital link in Pärnu’s trading network by sorting and storing grain.
During the turmoil of World War II, Schmidt’s company was nationalized by the Soviet Union, leading the family to flee to Germany. This event marked the end of over 200 years of the Schmidt family’s presence in Pärnu.
Today, you can explore this rich history on the 2nd floor of the Aida 5 building, where a small historical exhibit is displayed. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Errit Kuldkepp, whose dedication and research helped bring this unique story to light!
